You've invested in beautiful hardwood floors — now here's how to keep them looking their best for years to come. These are the same tips we share with every client after completing an installation or refinishing project.
1. Use the Right Cleaning Products
The number one mistake homeowners make is using the wrong cleaner. Never use vinegar, ammonia, steam mops, or all-purpose cleaners on hardwood floors. These can strip the finish, dull the surface, or cause moisture damage.
Instead, use a pH-neutral cleaner specifically designed for hardwood floors. We recommend Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner for polyurethane finishes.
2. Sweep or Vacuum Regularly
Dirt and grit act like sandpaper underfoot, slowly scratching your finish. Sweep or vacuum at least twice a week — more in high-traffic areas or if you have pets.
Use a soft-bristle broom or a vacuum with a hard-floor setting (no beater bar). Microfibre dust mops are excellent for daily maintenance.
3. Manage Moisture Immediately
Water is hardwood's biggest enemy. Wipe up any spills immediately with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Never let water sit on your floors, and avoid wet mopping.
In Vancouver's climate, maintaining indoor humidity between 35–55% is important. Use a dehumidifier in summer and a humidifier in winter if needed.
4. Protect High-Traffic Areas
Place quality doormats at every entrance (both inside and outside) to catch dirt and moisture before it reaches your floors. Use runner rugs in hallways if needed, but avoid rubber-backed rugs — they can trap moisture and damage the finish.
5. Use Furniture Pads
Affix felt pads to the bottom of all furniture legs — chairs, tables, couches, beds. Replace them every 6–12 months as they wear down and collect grit. This single step prevents the majority of furniture scratches.
6. Protect Against Sun Damage
UV rays cause hardwood to fade or change colour over time. Use curtains, blinds, or UV-filtering window film in rooms with direct sunlight. Rearrange rugs and furniture periodically to ensure even aging.
7. Keep Pet Nails Trimmed
Pet nails are one of the leading causes of hardwood floor scratches. Keep your dogs' and cats' nails trimmed short, and consider placing washable rugs in their favourite lounging spots.
8. Remove Shoes at the Door
Shoes — especially heels and hard-soled shoes — concentrate body weight into small pressure points that can dent and scratch wood. A no-shoes policy dramatically extends the life of your floors.
9. Maintain Consistent Temperature
Extreme temperature swings cause wood to expand and contract, leading to gaps, cupping, or buckling. Keep your home between 15–25°C year-round, even when you're away.
10. Schedule Professional Maintenance
Have your floors professionally cleaned and inspected every 1–2 years. A professional can identify early signs of wear, apply maintenance coats to extend the finish's life, and address small issues before they become big problems.
The Bottom Line
Hardwood floor care isn't complicated — it's really about consistency. A few simple habits protect your investment and keep your floors looking stunning for decades.
