The Complete Guide to Choosing the Right Hardwood Floor

Choosing the right hardwood floor is one of the most impactful decisions you'll make for your home. The right floor enhances your space's beauty, increases property value, and provides decades of durability. Here's our comprehensive guide to making the best choice.

Understanding Wood Species

Domestic Hardwoods

Red Oak remains the most popular choice for Canadian homes. It's durable, readily available, and takes stain beautifully. Its prominent grain pattern adds character to any room.

White Oak has surged in popularity thanks to its tighter grain, superior water resistance, and compatibility with modern aesthetics. It's the go-to for contemporary Vancouver homes.

Maple offers a clean, subtle grain that works well in minimalist interiors. It's extremely hard, making it ideal for high-traffic areas and families with children.

Exotic Hardwoods

Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba) provides rich, warm tones that deepen beautifully over time. It's one of the hardest commercially available species.

Walnut offers deep, dark coloring with a luxurious grain pattern. It's softer than oak but creates an undeniably elegant statement.

Choosing a Finish

Oil-Based Polyurethane

The traditional choice that provides a warm, amber tone. It's highly durable and cost-effective, though it takes longer to cure and produces stronger odours during application.

Water-Based Polyurethane

Dries faster with minimal odour and maintains the wood's natural colour. Modern formulations offer durability comparable to oil-based options.

Hardwax Oil

A premium European-style finish that penetrates the wood rather than sitting on top. It provides a beautiful, natural look and is easier to spot-repair — ideal for homes with pets and children.

Installation Methods

Nail-Down

The gold standard for solid hardwood over plywood or wooden subfloors. Provides the most secure, long-lasting installation with superior feel underfoot.

Glue-Down

Best for concrete subfloors and engineered hardwood. Creates a solid bond that minimizes movement and hollow spots.

Floating

The quickest installation method, ideal for engineered hardwood and situations where the subfloor can't be nailed or glued. Uses a click-lock system over underlayment.

Considerations for Vancouver Homes

Vancouver's coastal climate means moisture management is critical. We always recommend:

  • Acclimatizing wood for at least 5–7 days before installation
  • Moisture testing both the subfloor and the wood itself
  • Quality underlayment with built-in moisture barriers for concrete subfloors
  • Engineered hardwood for below-grade installations

Our Recommendation

For most Vancouver homes, we recommend white oak with a hardwax oil finish, installed using the nail-down method over plywood subfloors. This combination offers the best balance of beauty, durability, and practicality for our climate.
